Normally for old type of electrolyzer, there is a gap between anode surface and cathode surface. For old design, the gap is good for protection of membrane. Because it can avoid high pressure on membrane. But the gap increases the cell voltage. So it is no good for electrolyzer power consumption.
Zero Gap Retrofitting is to use the original cathode mesh as current, place a nickel mattress on the cathode, and then place a new activated minimesh on the mattress. The nickel fills up the gap between cathode and membrane. The minimesh works as a new cathode. After modification, during operation, anode touches membrane, and cathode touches membrane too. This is so called Zero Gap.
